Chhatia Bata, Hindu temple in Odisha, India

Chhatia Bata is a Jagannath temple in Chhatia village, Jajpur district, Odisha. Its white entrance has a rust-brown barred metal gate; above it a sculpted panel shows a crowned standing figure flanked by smaller seated figures. Tiered brown dome-topped towers with small flags rise on each side, and stairs behind the gate lead into a dark passage.

Chhatia Bata takes its name from a banyan tree at the site and is linked to the saint Hadidas, author of the Maalika, who took samadhi here. The Odia Wikipedia also records that the remains of Amaravati-Katak, one of five forts of Chodagangadeva, lie here. The temple is associated with Kalki, the future avatar of Vishnu.

The name Chhatia Bata joins the village name with bata, the Odia word for the banyan tree that stands here. Saint Hadidas took samadhi at this site, and the local college is named after him. His Maalika is recited in connection with the temple's prophecy that Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra will move here from Puri.

Chhatia lies on the road between Cuttack and Jajpur in Jajpur district, so the temple is reached by road from either town. The entrance shown is a white gateway with a rust-brown barred metal gate; the guard's sign at its base names the temple and the district. The sanctum and the shrine of Kalki sit inside the compound.

The black sign at the gate's base reads "GUARD OF CHHATIA BATA TEMPLE, DIST. CUTTACK, ORISSA, INDIA", though the temple lies in Jajpur district. The gate's sculpted panel shows a crowned standing figure flanked by smaller seated figures, and each flanking tiered tower carries a small flag.
