Jim Jim Falls

Jim Jim Falls

Description

Jim Jim Falls is a waterfall in Kakadu National Park that drops about 200 meters from the escarpment into a deep pool below. The water can be very powerful during the wet season, while in the dry season it becomes quieter and reveals clear rocky river sections.

History

This area has been home to local people for thousands of years, with cliffs and waterholes holding meaning for the traditional landowners. The landscape itself shows signs of ancient geological formation shaped over vast periods of time.

Culture

The name Jim Jim comes from the Aboriginal word 'andjimdjim', referring to a water pandanus plant that grows along the creek. This plant holds deep meaning in the stories and lives of people who have inhabited this area for thousands of years.

Practical

Visitors need a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle to handle the rough road, especially during the dry season. The walk to the falls is about 1 kilometer long with rocks and climbing sections, so sturdy shoes and careful footing are essential.

Did you know?

If you want to see the falls from above by air, flights are best during the wet season when the waterfalls flow at full power and the land looks lush and green. From the air, the place looks completely different than from the ground.
