Archaeological area of Morería
The Archaeological area of Morería is an excavation site in Mérida displaying remains of residences, walls, and public structures spanning multiple centuries. A modern protective structure built on micropilots covers the ancient stones below and allows visitors to view the layered remains directly.
Morería developed from the 1st century under Roman rule through the Visigothic period and later came under Muslim control. The city walls underwent extensive expansion while sections were later destroyed by Caliphate rulers to prevent rebellions.
The Morería area represents a neighborhood that evolved through multiple periods of habitation and cultural influence. Walking through it today, you can observe how different peoples shaped the urban layout and left traces of their daily lives in the stones and streets.
The site is accessible daily with hours varying by season, shorter in winter and extended into the evening during summer months. A visitor center next to the grounds offers maps and additional information to help understand the ruins.
Beneath the modern structure lie preserved Roman houses including a large estate called Los Mármoles from the 3rd century with its own thermal bath. This residence demonstrates the luxury and scale that wealthy families enjoyed in ancient times.
