Iglesia del Carmen

The Iglesia del Carmen is a Baroque church in Mérida with elaborate architectural details marking its facade. The building features Solomonic columns at the entrance, a side doorway on the north side, and a Latin cross floor plan.

The church was built between 1749 and 1764 by Barefoot Franciscans during an active period of religious construction. After the church property seizures under Mendizábal in the 1800s, the building later served as a mental hospital.

The church displays Baroque religious sculptures including figures of Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross that reflect Catholic traditions in the region. These artworks show the spiritual importance the building held for worshippers.

The church is easy to find in the city and accessible during extended hours most days of the week. Visitors should know that interior spaces may not be available for sightseeing during religious services.
