Johari Bazaar
Marché Johari is a marketplace in Jaipur stretching about two kilometers with over 400 shops selling jewelry, fabrics, and handicrafts. The small shops are filled with rings, necklaces, earrings, and bangles in various styles, along with traditional Rajasthani textiles and colorful handcrafted items including leather goods, pottery, and wooden figurines.
The market was established around the 1700s when the city was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, created to bring jewelers and traders together. Over time it developed into a lively center for jewelry, fabrics, and handicrafts, maintaining its historical importance as a trading place to this day.
The marketplace takes its name from the jewelers who have worked here for generations, passing down their craft through families. Visitors can observe how bargaining is woven into daily interactions, creating a social rhythm where negotiation is both expected and celebrated.
The market typically opens around 10 in the morning and stays open until evening, with many shops closed on Sundays. Wear comfortable shoes as you navigate narrow alleys, keep an eye on your belongings since crowds can be heavy, and consider visiting during the cooler months from October to March for a more pleasant experience.
A special lane called Maniharon Ka Rasta houses small shops specializing in bangle making and preserving traditional craftsmanship techniques that are increasingly rare to find. This tucked-away passage offers an intimate look at specialized workshops often overlooked by the main marketplace crowds.
