Similipal National Park

Similipal National Park

Similipal National Park is a large forest area in Odisha with dense woodlands spread across gentle slopes and higher peaks. Within it stand two notable waterfalls - Barehipani drops from great height creating misty spray, while Joranda forms a peaceful single cascade.

The park was established in 1973 as one of India's first nine tiger reserves. This protected status was created to preserve the forest's rich biodiversity and safeguard the tiger population.

The park takes its name from the red silk cotton trees that grow abundantly throughout the forest. Local tribes such as the Santhal and Koya have lived near the forest for generations and maintain a deep connection with the land through their reliance on its resources.

Guided jungle safaris and treks are the best way to observe wildlife in natural habitat. Visitors should book in advance, bring comfortable clothing and binoculars, and follow park rules.

The park is home to a rare black tiger variant with dark fur instead of typical orange and black coloring, a result of inbreeding within the population. These melanistic tigers attract researchers and nature observers worldwide, making this forest a unique location for tiger study.
