Maa Tarini Temple, Ghatgaon, Hindu temple in Ghatgaon, India
Maa Tarini Temple is a Shakti shrine on a forested hill in Ghatgaon, Odisha, where visitors climb a steep path to reach the summit. The grounds include a main shrine with a red dome, several smaller prayer halls, and stone platforms scattered under old trees.
Raja Govinda Bhanja Deo of Kendujhar established the shrine in the late 15th century following guidance from the ruler of Puri. Over the centuries, it grew into an important pilgrimage site for devotees across the region.
The name Tarini comes from the Sanskrit word for rescuer, and pilgrims approach the shrine seeking protection and guidance in difficult moments. Many visitors tie small red threads on trees near the prayer halls, a practice that connects personal wishes to the goddess.
The climb to the shrine takes around 20 minutes along stone steps that can become slippery during rain. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the path can be tiring on warm days.
Local legends speak of a king who followed the sound of divine ornaments through the forest until they suddenly stopped, revealing the sacred spot. This moment marked the place where the shrine was later built.
