Kichakeshwari Temple, Hindu temple in Khiching, Mayurbhanj district, India
Kichakeshwari Temple is a Hindu temple in Khiching, in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, built from black chlorite stone. The structure rises in multiple tiers and its outer walls are covered with stone carvings depicting deities and mythological scenes.
The temple traces its origins to the 7th century, when it served as a key religious site for the Kichaka kingdom that ruled the region. In the early 20th century, the building underwent a major renovation that kept many of the original sculptures in place.
Kichakeshwari is worshipped as a form of Durga and is considered the guardian deity of the surrounding region. On festival days, the temple fills with pilgrims who bring flowers and offerings and gather around the main shrine in large numbers.
The temple is in the village of Khiching and can be reached on foot from the center of the village. Visiting in the early morning is a good idea, as it is cooler and the site tends to be less crowded than later in the day.
The goddess is shown wearing a garland made of skulls, which connects her to the iconography of Kali but represents a regional form that developed independently in this area. This depiction sets the temple apart from many other shrines across Odisha.
