Rajgir Ropeway
The Rajgir Ropeway is a cable car system that lifts visitors up Ratnagiri Hill to the famous Vishwa Shanti Stupa at the summit. The journey rises approximately 300 meters (1000 feet) above ground and offers views of surrounding forests, hills, and open terrain.
The Rajgir Ropeway is among India's oldest still-operating cable systems and was built to serve the Vishwa Shanti Stupa, symbolizing friendship between India and Japan. The construction links modern engineering with the long history of Buddhist devotion at this site.
The name "Ratnagiri" means "Mountain of Jewels" and connects the site to Buddhist teachings that have been honored here for centuries. Pilgrims from Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist traditions use this route to reach sacred sites where they meditate and pray.
The ride takes about 7 to 10 minutes each way and runs in enclosed cabins that hold up to eight people. It is best to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when crowds are lighter and weather is clearer.
The ropeway was originally built with open chairlifts, but these are no longer in operation, so all passengers now ride in modern enclosed cabins. This safety change shows how the operation has adapted to current standards over the years.
