The Bijlokesite is a cultural and arts campus in Ghent, Belgium, housed in former monastery buildings along the Leie River. The grounds bring together a concert hall, a city museum, a cinema, a café, and workspaces for theater and the arts.
The site traces back to a hospital founded in the 13th century by a prominent Ghent family, later relocated next to a Cistercian convent outside the city walls. After French authorities dissolved the convent at the end of the 18th century, the buildings changed hands and uses several times before Ghent bought and restored them in 1913.
The Bijlokesite is home to around twenty arts organizations, including a music orchestra, a theater group, a jazz club, and an opera academy, all sharing the same grounds. On any given day, visitors might walk past singers rehearsing or stumble onto an open rehearsal or performance.
The site sits close to the center of Ghent and is easy to reach on foot. Since each organization on the grounds keeps its own hours, it is worth checking in advance what is open or scheduled for the day of your visit.
A small waterway still runs beneath the grounds and may be a remnant of an old arm of the Leie River that once crossed the site diagonally. This hidden channel is a quiet reminder of how much the river shaped the place long before any building was raised here.
