Leopoldskazerne, Military site renovation in Ghent, Belgium
Leopoldskazerne is a former military complex being transformed into a mixed-use development with apartments, offices, a hotel, and a central square. The project includes residential units of varying sizes, houses, parking areas, and landscaped gardens throughout the grounds.
The complex was built between 1890 and 1905 and originally housed soldiers in barracks buildings. Later it served as a training and administrative center for health services.
The site sits along Ghent's art corridor and connects major cultural institutions including SMAK, the Museum of Fine Arts, and HISK art college in the district. Visitors can walk between these places and experience the art scene across the whole area.
The site is undergoing transformation and opens progressively to visitors. The main walkways lead through the central square and landscaped paths connecting to neighboring cultural institutions.
During renovation, the thick defensive walls and corner towers were deliberately preserved while new openings were created to connect the grounds with the adjoining Citadel Park. This creates an interesting contrast between the solid historic architecture and contemporary access.
