Citadelpark, Public park in central Ghent, Belgium
Citadelpark is a public park on elevated ground between the Scheldt and Lys rivers, featuring winding paths through undulating terrain. Various tree species line the routes and create a diverse natural environment for visitors.
The park was created in 1875 on the grounds of a former Dutch fortress that was one of Europe's largest military installations from 1819 to 1870. After the fortress closed, the area was transformed into a public space.
The Museum of Fine Arts and the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art are located within the park, making it a hub for Ghent's art community. Visitors come to experience exhibitions surrounded by green spaces and trees.
The park offers recreational facilities including a children's playground, ping pong tables, basketball courts, and spaces for outdoor activities and picnics. Visitors should expect uneven terrain and wear sturdy shoes, especially in wet conditions.
The park contains over 1,000 trees representing more than 100 different species, with some rare varieties marked by identification tags. This botanical diversity makes it a place where visitors can discover different tree species up close.
