Baths of Kaptan Kılıç Ali Paşa, Historic hammam in Tophane, Beyoğlu, Turkey

The Baths of Kaptan Kılıç Ali Paşa are a historic Ottoman hammam in the Tophane area of Beyoğlu, Istanbul. The building is organized around a large central dome that draws daylight into the interior, with adjoining rooms arranged for different water temperatures.

The hammam was built between 1578 and 1583 on the orders of Kılıç Ali Paşa, an Ottoman naval commander, and was designed by the architect Mimar Sinan. After centuries of use, it was carefully restored and reopened to the public in 2012.

The hammam sits in the Tophane neighborhood and was built to serve sailors and port workers who gathered here after long shifts. Today, visitors can still feel the warmth of the stone surfaces and follow the sequence of rooms from cooler to hotter spaces.

The hammam has separate visiting times for men and women, so it is worth checking the current schedule before you go. It is located in the Tophane area, within easy walking distance of the waterfront.

Kılıç Ali Paşa, who commissioned this bath, was originally an Italian sailor captured by the Ottoman navy, who eventually rose to become the empire's highest naval commander. His name translates roughly as 'Ali the Sword' in Turkish, a title awarded to him after a sea victory.
