Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church of Galata

Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church of Galata, Armenian Apostolic church in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, Turkey.

Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church of Galata is an Armenian Apostolic church in Beyoğlu featuring a prominent dome with a conical roof. It combines traditional Armenian design elements throughout its architectural structure.

The church was founded in 1391 by Armenian merchant Kozma and underwent multiple reconstructions following fires in 1660 and 1731. A complete rebuild took place during the 1960s.

The interior displays religious artifacts with French and Italian porcelain tiles that reflect international influences on Armenian sacred art.

The church sits on Sakızcılar Street in Karaköy and is easily accessible for visitors exploring the area. Regular services are held for the Armenian community of Istanbul.

This building stands as the oldest Armenian Apostolic religious structure in Istanbul and has been documented in Ottoman records since 1455. Its enduring presence marks a significant chapter in the city's Armenian history.
