Port of Istanbul, Maritime terminal in Karaköy, Istanbul, Turkey
The Port of Istanbul is a maritime terminal on the Golden Horn waterfront that stretches from the Galata Bridge to the Bosporus coast. The facility with its two piers houses passenger processing halls connected to a modern district behind it.
The Galata Pier was built starting in 1892 and completed in 1900, with warehouses added later. The terminal became the city's main passenger hub as shipping traffic grew throughout the 1900s.
The port is now woven into a lively district with shops, restaurants, and the Istanbul Modern museum, where visitors encounter art exhibitions and local events alongside the shipping activity.
The terminal is within walking distance of central Istanbul and has direct tram links. Processing happens through multiple halls, and the surrounding area offers plenty of restaurants and shops to explore before or after your trip.
The terminal was built underground so the waterfront above stays open for public use while five large cruise ships can dock in the adjacent basins at the same time. This design allows the busy harbor to blend with the city life around it.
