Terrazza del Duomo, Roof terrace in Milan, Italy

Terrazza del Duomo is a roof terrace on top of the cathedral in central Milan, Italy. It consists of marble walkways that wind between tall spires, carved figures, and flying buttresses, with levels at different heights offering close views of the stone details and the city beyond.

The terraces follow the original layout of the cathedral, which was built over several centuries in the Gothic style. The largest spire was finished in the late 1700s under architect Francesco Croce, and the Madonnina was placed on top in 1774.

The rooftop is where visitors can stand beside the Madonnina, the small golden statue of the Virgin Mary that overlooks the city from the tallest spire. People often point to this figure as a symbol of protection for Milan, and you can see it shining in the sunlight from many spots along the walkways.

Wear comfortable shoes because the walkways are uneven and the climb to the upper level involves steep stairs. A scarf or shawl is useful for covering shoulders and knees, which is expected since the cathedral is a place of worship.

This is the only Gothic cathedral in the world where you can walk on the roof itself, among the spires and statues. From some spots you can see the Alps on the horizon, which many first-time visitors do not expect from the middle of the city.
