Sidra Medicine, Hospital in Ar Rayyan, Qatar
Sidra Medicine is a hospital and outpatient center in Ar Rayyan, Qatar, that provides specialized care for women and children. The building has a curved exterior and three atriums inspired by the sail of a dhow, and it houses 380 beds across three separate care areas.
Sidra Medicine opened in 2018 as part of Qatar Foundation's Education City. It was created to provide advanced healthcare for women and children in Qatar and the region, and it also supports medical research and education.
The design of the building reflects Qatari culture, with atriums shaped like the sail of a dhow, a traditional wooden boat used for fishing and pearl diving. Outside, a sculpture installation by Damien Hirst called The Miraculous Journey adds a public art element that visitors can see.
The hospital sits in Education City, with clear signs and glass elevators that make it easy to find your way around. Visitors can use the underground parking, which has sculpted arches and a wavy ceiling, and the green spaces and fountains outside offer places to rest.
The building's curved shape is designed to keep dust and sand from collecting in the desert climate. Inside, each care area has its own design elements, and the glass elevators serve as landmarks to help people find their way.
