Education City, Academic enclave in Doha, Qatar.
Education City is an academic enclave in Doha where university buildings from different countries sit beside libraries and research centers. The architecture of each institution differs greatly, from glass facades to folded metal structures.
The compound began in 1997 as an initiative to bring educational offerings from Western universities to Qatar. Over the following years, branches of American and European institutions arrived and built their own structures on the site.
The name was chosen by Qatar Foundation to gather knowledge and research in one part of the city. Today people from more than 70 countries work and study here, where Arabic mixes with other languages in daily life.
Visiting requires prior registration, as the grounds are not open for free passage. Anyone coming should wear comfortable shoes because distances between buildings can be quite large.
Each university brings its own cafeteria and bookshop, so several parallel supply structures have developed on the grounds. The buildings are connected by an underground passage that offers shelter from the heat.
