Broumovské stěny, National nature reserve near Martínkovice, Czech Republic
Broumovské stěny is a sandstone cliff range and geomorphological subdistrict in northeastern Czech Republic, near Martínkovice, protected as a national nature reserve. The rock walls rise sharply above the surrounding countryside, shaped into towers, crevices, and narrow passages by centuries of weathering.
The sandstone formations were built up over millions of years and then gradually carved by wind and water into their current shapes. Over the centuries, the site attracted hermits and monks who used the caves and rock shelters as places of refuge.
Sturdy footwear is essential since the trails cross uneven, rocky ground throughout. It is also worth bringing water and clothing suited to the season, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
The rock walls offer climbing routes for both beginners and experienced climbers, with a wide range of difficulty levels concentrated in one place. This makes the area one of the few spots in the Czech Republic where such a broad mix of climbing options sits within a single outing.
