Broumovské stěny, National nature reserve near Martínkovice, Czech Republic
Broumovské stěny is a sandstone cliff range and geomorphological subdistrict in northeastern Czech Republic, near Martínkovice, protected as a national nature reserve. The rock walls rise sharply above the surrounding countryside, shaped into towers, crevices, and narrow passages by centuries of weathering.
The sandstone of the ridge belongs to the Middle Turonian Jizera Formation, laid down in the Cretaceous. The area was declared a national nature reserve in 1956 on 638 hectares; in 2009 its Polické stěny section was separated into a new national natural monument.
Sturdy footwear is essential since the trails cross uneven, rocky ground throughout. It is also worth bringing water and clothing suited to the season, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
The longest cave in the reserve, Pod Luciferem, runs 395 metres through the block scree on the steep northeastern slopes. The massif also holds the rock mushrooms and rock basins of the Božanovský Špičák plateau, the highest part of the range at 781 metres.
