Morávka Reservoir, reservoir in Czechia
Morávka Reservoir is a water storage facility built on the Morávka stream in the Czech town of Morávka. The facility covers an area of about 80 hectares, is held back by an earth and stone dam approximately 39 meters high, and contains over 12 million cubic meters of water.
The facility was built between 1961 and 1967 to supply drinking water to the local population and protect the area from flooding. In the late 1990s, it underwent major repairs where the original sealing system was replaced with modern plastic materials, a technique that drew international attention.
The reservoir takes its name from the Morávka stream that feeds it. Today, it serves the local community not only as a water source but also as a quiet spot where visitors can connect with the surrounding landscape and the rhythm of mountain life.
The area is accessible via marked walking paths that circle the reservoir and offer views of the surrounding hills. Swimming and fishing are prohibited due to the protected status of the water supply, but walking and photography are welcome activities.
During renovations in the 1990s, an innovative plastic sealing system from Italy was installed, a technique that was cutting-edge for Central and Eastern Europe at the time and attracted international expert attention. This repair method became a benchmark for similar projects across the region.
