Šibenice, Artillery fort in Jamnice and Březová, Czech Republic
Šibenice is an artillery fort located on elevated terrain between Jamnice and Březová at 377 meters above ground. The structure features concrete fortifications built for defensive purposes along northern Czechoslovak borders.
Construction started in 1938 as part of Czechoslovak defense planning but stopped after the Munich Agreement later that year. The incomplete fort remains a mark of the political upheaval of that era.
The name Šibenice traces back to the Thirty Years' War, when the hill served as an execution site. Visitors can sense this darker past while walking through the area today.
The site is accessible by road connecting Jamnice and Březová, with parking available around 200 meters from the fort. The elevated location means you should prepare for sloped terrain and potentially muddy conditions during wet weather.
Initial construction plans called for eight combat structures with rotating towers and mortar positions, yet only shaft foundations were completed. This incomplete state makes the site a striking example of unfinished military architecture frozen in time.
