Čertova stěna-Luč, National nature reserve in Loučovice, Czech Republic
Čertova stěna-Luč is a protected nature reserve with rock formations and stone fields spread across the landscape near the Vltava River. Cliffs rise above the water in distinctive shapes, creating a dramatic setting where the river has carved through stone over thousands of years.
The reserve became one of the first protected areas in South Bohemia when it received official status in 1935. This designation helped ensure the landscape and its natural features would be preserved over the long term.
The name refers to an old local legend about supernatural beings attempting to construct a dam to flood a nearby monastery. Stories like this shape how people in the region understand and speak about the place.
The reserve is accessible via marked walking trails, with viewpoints such as the Devil's Pulpit offering views across the river and surrounding landscape. Spring through autumn is the best time to visit, when weather is stable and the ground remains firm for walking.
The reserve contains a natural water course called Devil's Streams where boulders have been carved into unusual shapes by the river over millennia. Some of these rocks display deep pot-shaped depressions formed by constant water movement and erosion.
