Domo de artoj, Cultural monument in Moravská Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Dům umění is a one-storey Functionalist and Constructivist building with large areas of brick walls, opened in 1926 near the Elektra café in Moravská Ostrava. It houses the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava, with a large exhibition hall lit by a lantern skylight, a small hall with side windows, a lecture hall, and two former artist studios on the upper floor.
František Jureček, an Ostrava builder and art collector, initiated the Society for the Construction and Maintenance of an Exhibition Pavilion in Moravian Ostrava, founded on 24 January 1923. A jury including Václav Vilém Štech, František Váhala and Bohuslav Fuchs chose the design by František Fiala and Vladimír Wallenfels, built by Rudolf Kaulich. Jureček died before the opening on 13 May 1926, leaving the house his 113-piece collection.
The building has housed the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava since it opened. Its name comes from the Society for the Construction and Maintenance of an Exhibition Pavilion in Moravian Ostrava, founded on 24 January 1923 by builder and collector František Jureček, who left the house his 113-piece collection as the gallery's founding core.
The building stands near the Elektra café in Moravská Ostrava, with the main entrance leading into a vestibule flanked by exhibition halls, each with its own door. The large hall in the left wing measures 8 by 31 metres and is lit from above by a lantern. The first floor, reached by the main staircase, holds two further exhibition rooms.
The architect František Jureček, who initiated the building, died before its opening on 13 May 1926 and never saw it finished. He left the House of Art his collection of 113 items, which became the foundation of the gallery's holdings.
