Church of Saint Charles Borromeo, Neoclassical church in Malá Strana, Prague, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint Charles Borromeo is a single-nave late Neoclassical hall church with a semicircular apse and a small bell turret, built by Adalbert Gudera as part of the Borromean Sisters' hospital "Pod Petřínem" at Vlašská 336/36. Its south facade holds three statues of the congregation's patron saints, and a two-storey gallery opens directly onto the hospital so patients could attend Mass.

The church was built in 1851–1856 as part of the motherhouse and hospital of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo, who came to Prague in 1837 at the invitation of Alois Klar and acquired the former Strahov vineyard site in 1841. It was consecrated on 4 November 1855. In 1952 the sisters were expelled; the church was deconsecrated in 1962 and used as a book depot holding nearly 90,000 volumes, with toilets where the altar stood. Returned to the congregation in 1990, it was reconsecrated on 22 August 1993.

The church is linked to the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo, founded in Nancy in 1652; the sisters came to Prague in 1837 at the invitation of Alois Klar. A polychrome wooden Pietà from the 14th century, once in the Benedictine convent of St. George at Prague Castle, was given to the sisters by Archbishop Bedřich of Schwarzenberg. At Christmas a crib carved by Mr Jirkovský between 2000 and 2010 is displayed.

The church sits on Vlašská Street in the heart of Malá Strana, easily reachable on foot from the neighborhood's main squares. Visitors should know that access is within the narrow lanes of the district and the area is well served by public transport.

The church holds a polychrome wooden Pietà from the 14th century, a Gothic sculpture that came from the Benedictine convent of St. George at Prague Castle. After Joseph II dissolved that convent, Archbishop Bedřich of Schwarzenberg gave the carving to the Borromean sisters.
