Rokytská slať, Fen in Modrava, Czech Republic
Rokytská slať is a raised bog containing numerous small ponds and pools scattered across a complex wetland ecosystem. The landscape is dominated by low vegetation and characteristic plant species adapted to the wet and acidic conditions of the peatland.
The bog was once accessible by a walking trail that led to Mount Roklan until the mid-20th century. The installation of the Iron Curtain after World War II cut off public access and transformed the area into a restricted zone.
Scientists conduct research in this protected zone of Šumava National Park to study peatland dynamics and monitor specific dragonfly species found nowhere else.
Access to the wetland is not permitted as it lies within the strictest protection zone of Šumava National Park. Visitors can only observe the area from a distance or from allowed viewpoints in the surrounding region.
Within the bog lies a section called Mrtvý les featuring dead spruce trunks that stand in the landscape for decades. These dense stands of decaying trees create an unusual and somber scene.
