Poledník, Mountain summit in Prášily, Czechia
Poledník is a gneiss summit in the Šumava mountain range near the Czech-German border, rising to about 1,315 meters in elevation. The mountain is crossed by marked hiking trails connecting to nearby villages and features a restored observation tower at the top.
The summit served as a border observation point during different periods of regional rule. An observation tower on the peak was repurposed as a military radio monitoring station during the Cold War era.
The summit draws visitors who come to experience the natural landscape and connect with the mountain traditions of the region. People use the marked trails as a way to engage with the Šumava environment and understand how locals have long interacted with this terrain.
Visitors can reach the summit by following marked trails from Prášily or surrounding areas without special equipment. Most people take a few hours to complete the hike, and the route is accessible during spring through autumn when weather conditions are most stable.
From the restored tower on clear days, visitors can see into multiple countries and look directly across to Rachel and Great Arber peaks on the German side. This vantage point gives a sense of how the Šumava mountains extend far beyond what seems visible from ground level.
