Gong, Concert hall in Lower Vítkovice, Czech Republic.
Gong is a multifunctional auditorium housed in a repurposed gas container building at Lower Vítkovice with capacity for roughly 1,500 spectators spread across multiple levels. The ground floor contains an information center, gallery space, and food facilities, while upper floors hold conference rooms and the main performance hall.
The structure was originally built in 1924 as a gas holder to store fuel for the industrial area. In the early 2000s, architect Josef Pleskot transformed it into a cultural venue while deliberately preserving its distinctive industrial shell and repurposing it for performances and events.
The venue takes its name from an Eastern percussion instrument, reflecting an artistic philosophy about sound and resonance. Visitors experience how the preserved industrial shell frames contemporary performances and exhibitions that fill the space.
The venue is easily accessible and offers ample parking within the industrial complex with clear directional signage throughout the site. Visitors should note that access is limited to scheduled events and organized tours, so advance planning is important.
The original bell of the gas holder was raised roughly 50 feet (15 meters) during renovation and remains a visual landmark of the building today. Over half a million rivets hold the entire steel frame together, showcasing early 20th century engineering craftsmanship.
