Gong, Concert hall in Lower Vítkovice, Czech Republic.
Gong is a concert hall and protected cultural monument in Vítkovice, a former industrial district of Ostrava, Czech Republic, housed inside a converted gas holder. The round steel structure has several floors, with a main performance hall, conference rooms, a gallery, and an information center at ground level.
The steel container was built in 1924 to store gas for the surrounding industrial area of Lower Vítkovice. In the early 2000s, architect Josef Pleskot oversaw its conversion into a cultural venue, keeping the original shell intact throughout the process.
The name comes from an East Asian percussion instrument, chosen to evoke the idea of sound spreading through a space. Inside, the curved steel walls and open vertical height shape how music and voices carry during performances.
The site sits within the Lower Vítkovice industrial complex, which is well signposted and has parking available on the grounds. The building is generally open only during events or guided tours, so checking what is scheduled before visiting is a good idea.
During the renovation, the original bell of the gas holder was raised about 50 feet (15 meters) and left in place as a visible part of the building. The steel frame is held together by more than half a million rivets, which visitors can see up close from the interior walkways.
