Mauritius is a historic mining complex in the mountainous terrain of northern Bohemia featuring underground tunnels and shafts cut through rock at different levels. The site reveals an intricate system of passages that expanded and deepened over many centuries of extraction work.

The site emerged in the medieval period as a tin extraction operation that grew into an economic hub of the Bohemian mining region. Over centuries, workers expanded the underground network deeper into the mountain until mining operations eventually ceased.

The mine shaped daily life in the surrounding communities for centuries, as mining families passed their skills and knowledge from one generation to the next. This work defined social bonds and local traditions tied to metalworking crafts.

Visitors can explore the site through guided tours where knowledgeable guides explain conditions underground and the mining process. Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes, as tunnels are damp and cool with uneven surfaces that require careful footing.

Original wooden support beams from the medieval period remain visible inside the tunnels, showing how miners prevented cave-ins using simple but effective engineering. These ancient timber structures have survived underground and reveal early approaches to safety in mining work.
