Statue of Lutgardis, Religious baroque statue on Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic.
The Statue of Lutgardis is a religious Baroque sculpture on Charles Bridge created by sculptor Matthias Braun. It stands on the south side of the bridge among roughly 30 other statues that line this famous crossing.
The statue was installed in 1710 during a period when Charles Bridge received numerous religious artworks. This expansion transformed the bridge into a spiritual route that drew pilgrims and the faithful across Prague.
The statue depicts Saint Lutgardis, a medieval mystic whose devotion runs deep in Bohemian spiritual traditions. Visitors encounter a religious figure whose local veneration has persisted for centuries among the people living in Prague.
The statue sits in an easy-to-reach location on the bridge and is accessible to all foot traffic crossing from either bank. Late afternoon light offers the best lighting for viewing and photographing the carved details.
The work displays exceptional detail in the facial features and fabric draping, reflecting Braun's advanced carving skill. Such fine craftsmanship is less apparent on most other statues along the bridge.
