Muzeum Fojtství, Historical museum in Kopřivnice, Czech Republic

Muzeum Fojtství occupies the oldest building in Kopřivnice, a brick structure from 1789 that replaced an earlier wooden bailiff's house. Its rooms hold exhibitions on local carriage-making and town history, while the barn displays six preserved vehicles, including Russian sledges, a funeral carriage and a Mylord britzka.

A bailiff's office (fojtství) was established on this site in 1576; the original wooden building was replaced by the current brick one in 1789. The building served as Kopřivnice's first school, with classes held in a back room around 1800. Ignác Šustala, born here, began making carriages in the estate's barn, a business that grew into the Tatra works.

The barn displays six surviving products of the Kopřivnice carriage works, among them Russian sledges, a hearse and a Mylord carriage, alongside models of the earliest production. The name fojtství refers to the bailiff's office established on this site in 1576. A plaque on the building recalls Ignác Šustala, born here, whose first workshop was the local barn.

The museum is easily accessible on foot with exhibitions spread across multiple rooms you can explore at your own pace. Plan extra time to see the courtyard and outbuildings, which hold important parts of the collection.

The upper floor was once a grain storage area that is now used as an art gallery featuring rotating shows. This repurposing of the historic space makes it worth visiting beyond the carriage exhibits.
