Gruň, Mountain ridge and hamlet in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, Czech Republic

Gruň is an eight-kilometre mountain ridge in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, running from the Ostravice valley near the Šance reservoir northeast to the Sulov hill by Bílý Kříž. Its highest points, west to east, are Příslop (782 m), Janikula (832 m), Gruň (843 m) and Kozlena (885 m). A scattered settlement of wooden chalets, once shepherd huts, lies between Janikula and Kozlena, with a wooden church as its landmark.

Settlement on the ridge began in the 18th century with paseky (clearings) and salaše (shepherd huts) after the upper Ostravice valley was colonised. In 1773 the pasekář Šimon Tomeček had a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary made; a chapel was built for it in 1847. In 1887 the Frýdek dean Karel Findinský had master carpenter Stanislav Pětroš build a wooden church, consecrated to Our Lady Help of Christians, which replaced the chapel. In 1908 the Radhošť mountain association converted a farm at Kozlena into the Švarná Hanka hut, and the Charbulák family's farm became a tourist lodge in 1918, rebuilt as a mountain hotel in 1928–1929.

The name Gruň comes from a Wallachian and Lach word for a ridge cleared of forest for sheep grazing. Wooden chalets that were once shepherd's huts still stand along the ridge, and sheep farming continues, including a breeding flock of the rare Wallachian sheep. A pilgrimage is held on the Sunday before 24 May at the wooden Church of Our Lady Help of Christians.

The best time to visit is during winter months when snow coverage is reliable and lifts operate regularly. Guests should bring proper winter gear and check conditions ahead of time, as operations depend on weather and snow levels.

The ridge's wet meadows northeast of the Gruň settlement are protected as the Podgruň natural monument, declared in 1990. In the small sedge fen and mat-grass pasture grow sundew and the swallowwort gentian, plants rare elsewhere on the deforested ridge.
