Lavička Václava Havla in Zlín, Memorial bench in Zlín, Czech Republic
Václav Havel's Bench in Zlín is a memorial site featuring two connected chairs and a round table with a tree growing through its center along Gahurův prospekt. The structure combines steel and wood elements and is surrounded by information panels with quotes and reflections from the former president.
Architect Bořek Šípek designed this memorial, which opened on November 14, 2019, as part of an international initiative by Czech diplomats to honor the former president. The project reflected a broader effort to create similar spaces worldwide.
The benches function as a gathering spot where visitors pause to consider ideas about freedom and responsibility. The inscriptions on the surrounding panels encourage people to think about the themes Havel championed.
The site is easy to access and the information panels are permanently visible, allowing visitors to explore Havel's thoughts at their own pace. There is plenty of seating space to rest and linger without needing special arrangements.
This memorial belongs to a worldwide network of similar Havel benches spread by Czech diplomats across the globe. Zlín received one of the few locations where the community is invited to gather for exchange and reflection.
