Apshawa Preserve, County park in West Milford, US.
Apshawa Preserve is a county park in West Milford containing mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and the Butler Reservoir spread across 576 acres. More than five miles of marked trails connect these different habitats and allow exploration throughout the property.
The New Jersey Conservation Foundation established this property in 1928 to protect regional ecosystems and water resources. This early conservation effort has safeguarded the land for generations of visitors and wildlife.
The preserve functions as an educational center where visitors learn about local ecology through guided nature walks and environmental programs.
The preserve is open from dawn to dusk and can be accessed from the main entrance on Northwood Drive, where a gravel parking lot and trail map are available. Wearing appropriate footwear and bringing water is recommended since conditions can vary across different trail sections.
A deer exclosure fence was installed in 2010 to create a protected zone where native plants can grow without pressure from local deer. This experiment allows visitors to see how vegetation develops differently when herbivores are kept out.
