U.S. Post Office, historic post office building in Napa, California
The U.S. Post Office is an Art Deco post office building located in downtown Napa. Its facade features three sections with six tall openings framed by columns with decorative capitals and a terra cotta band depicting ram and cow heads, while the interior features a painted bas-relief ceiling and terrazzo flooring.
The building was completed in 1933 during the New Deal era when many public structures were constructed across the country. A severe earthquake in 2014 caused substantial damage, leading to its closure and eventual conversion into a hotel.
The name refers to its function as a federal postal facility. The building's geometric forms and terra cotta embellishments featuring ram and cow heads reflected the era's view of Art Deco as progressive and forward-thinking design.
The building is centrally located in Napa and easily accessible on foot, especially if you want to visit nearby shops and other historic sites. Although it no longer functions as an active post office, you can observe the exterior and some details while renovation work proceeds.
The building's interior features a rare painted bas-relief ceiling, an uncommon detail for federal buildings of this era. This artistic touch reveals how much care went into creating a post office that went beyond basic function.
