Renard Isle, Artificial island in Green Bay, United States.
Renard Isle is an artificial island located northeast of the Fox River mouth in Wisconsin, built as a facility to store dredged materials. The 55-acre site holds sediments that were removed from the river and harbor during maintenance and channel improvements.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the island in 1977 to manage sediments from the Fox River and harbor that needed containment. The project emerged from the need to safely store contaminated materials while maintaining waterway navigation.
Local communities monitor the environmental impact of the facility, which holds materials containing PCBs, mercury, and other chemical compounds.
The island is not open to public visits and can only be observed from a distance. Your best views come from specific vantage points on the mainland or from the water.
A planned causeway connecting the island to the mainland was never completed due to disagreements between local authorities. The project highlighted tensions over access rights and responsibility for the site.
