Tri-Cities, Vernacular region in Kane County, Illinois, US
Tri-Cities refers to the combined area of Batavia, Geneva, and St. Charles, three towns positioned between Aurora and Elgin along the Fox River in northern Illinois. Each municipality maintains its own government and identity while functioning as an interconnected economic and residential zone.
The Tri-Cities name originated from an 1910 directory published by Evans Directory Service. This publication continued through ten editions until 1943, establishing the regional designation that persists today.
The three municipalities maintain individual governments while sharing resources, celebrations, and community initiatives that connect their combined population of 81,500 residents.
This area is accessible by highway and served by Pace buses and Metra trains at multiple stops throughout the region. Shopping and retail services are concentrated along Kirk Road and Randall Road, making them convenient reference points for getting oriented.
Batavia and St. Charles, two of the three municipalities, extend beyond Kane County boundaries and partly lie within DuPage County. This cross-county arrangement reflects how the region's growth followed natural geography rather than administrative lines.
