The S. H. Kress Building is a two-story retail structure with a flat roof located in downtown Albuquerque. Its facade displays decorative brown brick patterns, cast iron storefronts, and large plate glass windows accented with white stone molding bands.
The building was built in 1925 by the S. H. Kress & Co. chain as a retail store and served shoppers for several decades. After the parent company closed its operations in 1981, the structure was later listed as a historic place on the National Register.
The building reflects how downtown shopping streets looked in the early 1900s, with wide display windows and glass fronts designed to draw people in off the street.
The building sits in the center of Albuquerque's downtown shopping district and is easy to reach on foot. The interior is being redeveloped for new uses, so checking current accessibility before visiting is a good idea.
