Yard, Apartment building in Kerns, Portland, United States

Yard is a 21-story, 206-foot concrete and glass apartment building at the Burnside Bridgehead in Portland's Kerns neighborhood. Skylab Architecture designed it for Key Development Co. of Hood River and Guardian Real Estate Services, with ground-floor retail and 284 apartments above.

The Portland Development Commission began buying land at the east end of the Burnside Bridge around 2000, eventually spending $11 million. Plans were first submitted in 2006, but the Great Recession delayed the project. Construction started in October 2014 on an estimated $58 million project, and the building topped out in January 2016 at a ceremony attended by Congressman Earl Blumenauer.

Locals call the building the "Death Star" for its concrete-and-glass form, and it was dubbed "the new apartment building you'll love to hate." Its 284 units sit above ground-floor retail, and floors six through eight hold working-class studios assigned by lottery.

Yard stands at the Burnside Bridgehead in the Kerns neighborhood, at the east end of the Burnside Bridge, where the Portland Development Commission assembled land from about 2000. The ground floor holds retail space, and the 284 apartments above are private residences, so the building is seen from the street and surrounding blocks rather than toured inside.

The building's concrete-and-glass form earned it the nickname "Death Star" and the label "the new apartment building you'll love to hate." In 2018 it received an honor award from the American Society of Landscape Architects.
