Burnside Bridge, Bascule bridge in Old Town Chinatown, Portland, US
The Burnside Bridge stretches across the Willamette River with two prominent towers and metal railings connecting Portland's east and west neighborhoods.
The current bridge replaced a swing-span truss structure in 1926, incorporating advanced engineering methods and becoming a National Register of Historic Places site in 2012.
The bridge serves as a central gathering point for Portland residents, with the Saturday Market operating beneath its western end and a skatepark at its eastern approach.
The structure provides passage for 23,000 vehicles daily while accommodating pedestrians and cyclists through dedicated lanes across the Willamette River.
The bridge contains massive 1,700-ton counterweights inside its piers, making it one of the heaviest bascule bridges in the United States.
