Towne Storage Building, historic building in Portland, Oregon, USA
The Towne Storage Building is an office and warehouse from 1915 in Portland with high ceilings and large open spaces originally built to store goods arriving by ship and rail. A distinctive steel water tower stands on the property at about 130 feet tall, unusual for the region where wooden towers are typical.
The building was constructed in 1915 during Portland's rapid expansion as a trade center and stored goods arriving by river and rail. As trucking rose in the 1940s, the warehouse declined in importance and eventually closed in the 1950s.
The building is named after a company that handled paper and packaging products, storing goods and distributing them across the Pacific coast. Today it reflects how Portland's economy has shifted from a trade hub to a modern workspace for technology businesses.
The building is located in the Central Eastside neighborhood, a former industrial area that is easy to reach and has nearby cafes and shops. Visitors can see the exterior and water tower, while some interior spaces may be accessible depending on current business activities.
The building's steel water tower is unusual because wooden towers are standard in this region. It received the prestigious DeMuro Award for Historic Renovation after its 2016 restoration and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
