Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, Floating bridge across Lake Washington in Seattle, United States
The Evergreen Point Floating Bridge is a pontoon bridge in King County that crosses Lake Washington and links Seattle with communities to the east. The structure rests on large concrete pontoons that float on the water surface and are held in place by anchors.
The new bridge opened in 2016 and replaced an earlier structure built in 1963. A severe storm in 1990 damaged the old structure heavily and eventually led to the construction of the replacement.
The bridge represents Pacific Northwest engineering innovation, demonstrating methods to span deep waters where traditional bridge foundations prove impractical.
The bridge has dedicated lanes for buses and carpools on the left side. An electronic toll system captures vehicles automatically, with charges varying depending on time of day.
The bridge is the longest and widest floating bridge in the world, supported by 77 concrete pontoons. The central section reaches a width of about 35 meters (116 feet) and accommodates multiple lanes along with pedestrian and bicycle paths.
