Prospect Heights Housing Project, historic public housing complex at 560 Prospect Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Prospect Heights Housing Project is a residential complex in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, comprising 36 buildings across approximately 21 acres. Most structures are two-story row houses, complemented by a smaller building housing offices, community spaces, laundry facilities, and maintenance areas.
The complex was built in 1941-1942 as part of the New Deal program to help America during the economic crisis. It was the first federally funded public housing project in Pawtucket and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
The complex served as a significant housing solution for low-income families in Pawtucket and created a new way of living in the community. The buildings show how design could improve residents' quality of life, with careful orientation for natural light and ventilation.
The complex is located at the corner of Prospect Street and Beverage Hill Avenue and offers 312 residential units today. Visitors should note that this is an active residential neighborhood, and recent renovations may have altered areas or added amenities such as a splash park.
The project was groundbreaking as Pawtucket's first New Deal housing development and later became the first historically listed RAD project nationwide. This double distinction makes it a rare example of preservation for modern public housing projects.
