The San Diego History Center is a museum in Balboa Park that tells the story of the region through exhibition galleries filled with photographs, documents, and artifacts. The displays trace how the area developed and changed across different periods.
Founded in 1928 by civic leader George W. Marston as the San Diego Historical Society, it opened in the Mission-style Junípero Serra Museum on Presidio Hill, designed by William Templeton Johnson. In 1982 it moved its collections and research library to the Casa de Balboa in Balboa Park, keeping the Serra Museum as an auxiliary site. It took its present name in 2010 and became a Smithsonian Affiliate in 2013.
The center reflects how Native peoples, Spanish settlers, and later arrivals shaped the city's character and traditions. You can see these influences woven throughout the exhibits and in how residents connect with their shared heritage today.

The photograph collection holds 2.5 million images, one of the largest regional photography collections in the United States. It includes the Edward H. Davis Collection of Indian Photographs and Drawings (1900s–1940s) and the Norman Baynard Collection documenting the African-American community of Logan Heights from 1939 to 1985.
