Lime Canyon Wilderness

Lime Canyon Wilderness is a protected area in eastern Nevada that features deep canyons carved into the landscape, rolling hills, and sandy washes creating a patchwork of different habitats. The terrain transitions between rocky ridges and open flats with elevations ranging from around 2,000 to 4,400 feet.

Congress formally protected this land in 2002 as part of broader efforts to conserve Mojave Desert ecosystems and the species that depend on them. The designation came after years of discussion about how best to maintain the region's natural value.

Paiute peoples shaped this land for centuries, and their connection remains visible in local place names and the way the landscape is understood by those who live nearby. You can still find signs of their presence throughout the canyons and along travel routes.

Getting to this wilderness requires a high-clearance vehicle and careful navigation since roads are rough and services are nonexistent inside the boundaries. Bring plenty of water, maps, and supplies since you will be on your own once you arrive.

Desert tortoises make their home among vegetation like Joshua trees and barrel cacti, animals that are rarely seen but indicate a healthy desert ecosystem. Finding tracks or burrows of these creatures offers a glimpse into how wildlife adapts to this harsh environment.
