Brooks Lake Lodge
Brooks Lake Lodge is a log-built historic property completed in 1922 near Wyoming mountains and a mountain lake. The main building features a Roman cross shape with a large dining hall, stone fireplace, lounge areas, and guest rooms, surrounded by rustic cabins and support structures across approximately 22 acres.
Construction began in April 1922 and the lodge opened before July as a rest stop for travelers heading to Yellowstone National Park along a central Wyoming route. When a new highway bypass reduced visitor traffic after 1926, the owners transformed it into the Diamond G Ranch experience, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 1982.
The lodge is named after Bryant B. Brooks, Wyoming's seventh governor, who discovered this valley during a horseback ride in 1889 and spoke of its natural beauty. Visitors today notice the handcrafted details and Western art throughout the building, which reflect the simple beauty valued by early travelers to this region.
The site is located in a remote part of Wyoming near Dubois and is open year-round, with summer offering hiking and fishing activities and winter providing snowshoeing opportunities. Visitors should prepare for mountain conditions and bring appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, especially for outdoor exploration around the lake and mountain trails.
A fire in July 2019 damaged the roof and part of the dining area, but the main building was saved and has since been restored to continue welcoming visitors. This recovery reflects ongoing commitment to preserving the lodge's historic character for future generations.
