The Yamashiro Historic District stands on a hilltop with replicas of Japanese palaces, gardens, and a 600-year-old pagoda from Japan near a decorative pool.
German-American brothers Adolph and Eugene Bernheimer constructed this Japanese-inspired estate between 1911 and 1914 to display their collection of Asian art and artifacts.
The estate transformed from a private residence to a Hollywood social club in the 1920s, then underwent changes during World War II before becoming a restaurant.
The property contains nine preserved structures, including the main building that now functions as an Asian fusion restaurant with views of Los Angeles.
The original construction included 300 steps through gardens, carved rafters with gold lacquer, and walls covered in silk leading to a private zoo with exotic animals.
