Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden, Botanical garden in Villanova, Pennsylvania, US

Stoneleigh is a botanical garden in Villanova spreading across 42 acres of varied landscapes, featuring native woodlands, meadows, and multiple water elements. The design includes open areas broken by wooded sections that create different habitats for plants and wildlife.

The estate began in 1877 when Edmund Smith purchased 65 acres and built a house on the property. The Bodine family took over in 1900 and shaped its development from that point forward.

The gardens reflect designs by the Olmsted Brothers, connecting to a major tradition in American landscape architecture. The layout shows how nature and human spaces were meant to work together in this era.

Natural Lands maintains the garden and offers free access with walking paths, educational displays, and seating areas throughout the grounds. The trails are well marked, making it easy for visitors to explore at their own pace.

The property successfully defended against an eminent domain claim through legislation protecting conservation easements in Pennsylvania. This legal battle shaped its survival as a natural space in a growing area.
