Kirkuk Governorate, Administrative division in northern Iraq
Kirkuk Governorate extends across 9,679 square kilometers of northern Iraqi territory, containing the provincial capital city of Kirkuk and four administrative districts.
The region changed its name to At-Ta'mim Governorate in 1976 to emphasize national control of oil reserves, reverting to Kirkuk Governorate in 2006.
The population includes Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmen communities, each contributing distinct languages, traditions, and social practices to the region.
The governorate maintains transportation networks of roads and railways connecting major Iraqi cities, supporting regional commerce and population movement.
Archaeological excavations reveal ancient settlements including Arrapḫa, Nuzi, and Lubdu, with Arrapḫa located within modern-day Kirkuk city limits.
