National Monument, War memorial in Titiwangsa Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The memorial shows seven bronze figures rising 15 meters (49 feet) into the sky, standing together on a massive pedestal. The sculpture sits within a quiet garden area with lawns and palm trees, surrounded by low walls.
The government erected the work in 1966 as a replacement for an older British memorial structure. It commemorates those who fell during the Second World War and the insurgency that lasted from 1948 to 1960.
The site takes its name from its role as the official memorial point for all fallen soldiers of the country. On special days, veterans and their families gather here to attend quiet ceremonies together.
The garden lies within walking distance from the railway station and parliament buildings, easily reached via Jalan Tugu. The site is open daily and works well as a short stop between other visits in the area.
Sculptor Felix de Weldon, known for the Iwo Jima Memorial in the United States, also designed this work. It ranks as the largest freestanding bronze group of its kind worldwide.
