Danum Valley Conservation Area, Protected rainforest area in Sabah, Malaysia

The Danum Valley spans 438 square kilometers of primary rainforest containing over 300 bird species and numerous endemic plant varieties.

The territory gained conservation status in the 1980s to prevent logging activities and preserve one of Southeast Asia's largest undisturbed lowland forests.

The conservation area maintains strong connections with indigenous communities who share traditional knowledge about the rainforest's ecological systems.

Visitors need permits from the Lahad Datu office and can reach the valley through daily flights to Tawau, followed by ground transportation.

Scientists have documented 121 mammal species within the conservation area, including Borneo orangutans and proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat.
